Koma Komplex Elektronik Sequencer Update

via Koma Elektronik

"The long wait finally ends! Due to the supply chain disruption caused by Covid-19 we had to scrape together parts from all corners of the world for nearly two years. Finally the last necessary chip has found its way into the box labelled "Komplex Sequencer". We are now able to start producing a "golden sample" and organize a full production run.

First 10 persons pre-ordering will receive 10 KOMA Elektronik branded patch cables with the perfect size to internally patch the Komplex patchbay

GOLDEN SAMPLE
What is a "golden sample" and why is it necessary? First off: NO, there will NOT be a Komplex with an enclosure made out of gold (at least not in any forseeable future). But whenever a "complex" product like the Komplex undergoes some bigger changes, KOMA usually won't just go ahead and change a bunch of circuitry to willy nilly start production right away. Instead, great care is taken and a so-called 'golden sample' is produced. This means that all changes are worked into the circuitry and a single prototype is being built to be tested thoroughly.

NEW FEATURES
We added a new functionality into the Komplex Sequencer: The Transpose CV input now also transposes the MIDI notes that a sequencer is producing. Also some circuitry had to undergo changes to account for non-available and now obsolete chips. We already have a prototype here with the necessary changes but it still has a bunch of colored wires dangling out of the enclosure and the changes are essentially piggy-backed on the original circuitry. That's why we are producing a golden sample right now as you read these lines. Once that prototype comes back and is all good, we will trigger production.

WHAT ELSE HAS CHANGED?
The new Komplex run is very limited and will be available in 2 batches of 25 pieces each. Some of you that were eying the Komplex for a longer time might have noticed that the sales price increased. Unfortunately many components needed for building a Komplex sequencer have gotten more expensive since our last production run. In fact, it is fair to say that ALL components have gotten substantially more expensive. This starts with electronic parts not available on the market anymore, like microcontrollers that we had to buy for an elevated price, goes over hardware parts like sliders and pushbuttons and ends with greatly risen prices for both the metal enclosure and wooden sidecheeks.

WHAT NOW?
Since demand is huge, as of today, we have enabled backordering of Komplex Sequencers in our webshop. We have already ordered a few components like the metal enclosures and wooden sidepanels but the majority of production will have to wait until the golden sample is here. Since we already tested the new functionality and can verify it with our 'Frankenstein' unit here, it should be smooth sailing from here on out. In fact, we are testing this feature since nearly a year in our synth setup in the workshop and enjoy it thoroughly.

HOW TO PRE-ORDER
Current estimated delivery date for the first batch is September 2023. That's how long it takes for all the necessary parts to arrive in our workshop plus assemble time. It is "first come, first served" or as you programmers like to call it: FIFO (first in, first out)."

OMBIENT: Live!@EMEAPP (4/22/23)

video upload by EMEAPP

"This was a fun night. On April 22, 2023 we held our first video shoot in our live studio space with an audience in attendance with Ombient and Electric Diamond on the bill.

Ombient (Mike Hunter) was the opening performer on the bill and in the space of 30 minutes, he took the entire room on an electronic sonic journey complete with custom projections by PYXL8R. Armed with his custom Synthesizers.com modular system, Koma Elektronik Komplex Sequencer, Rhodes Chroma, Oberheim Matrix-6, ARP 2600 re-issue and a slew of effects, Ombient's performance was ultimately a swirling, constantly evolving set reminiscent of artists such as Tangerine Dream and Ashra.

A big thank you to Ombient (Mike Hunter), PXYL8R (Ken Palmer) Electric Diamon (Stuart Diamond, Don Slepian and Karen Bentley Pollick) and to all of our volunteers for helping to make this night a well-oiled and enjoyable experience for all.

You can find us at www.emeapp.org where we invite you to join us as a member."

KOMA Elektronik - Dual Discrete VCA - Overview

video upload by KOMA Elektronik

"A short introduction into the functions and interface of the KOMA Elektronik Dual Discrete VCA.

The Dual Discrete VCA offers two independent high-quality VCA channels, both built up out of discrete transistor cells with low CV and audio bleed, very low noise and distortion. It features two audio inputs per channel and can be used as a four input mixer.

The VCA’s feature set also enables you to experiment with the linear/exponential response curve of the cores, changing the dynamics of your sound.

Additionally, all four inputs offer a soft-clipping stage, so you can get your crunchy going!"

Modular Gang Becomes a Module

Press Release follows:

Modular Gang teams up with KOMA Elektronik to bring you a limited edition Dual Discrete VCA module. Modular Gang Founder Rachel Lyn was inspired by the aesthetics of vintage appliances and early electronic test equipment like the old control room tucked away in Berlin's Kraftwerk building. There is something nostalgic, electric and timeless about analog circuit design and murky pea mint. Big dials, old control room feel and lines to function played a major part in Rachel's inspiration.

For the final touch, Rachel adds a flower LED which will be an individual colour for each module. The flower represents her connection to nature and is a porthole to influence your music making. The flower does not only capture this concept but also that of Flower Power. The belief that war is wrong and that people should love and care for one another. A symbol to promote peace and love as a means of changing the world.

GIVEAWAY via Modular Gang's KOMA’s website...

EVENT on October 6th / KOMA Elektronik X Modular Gang (HQ Tour, Live + Workshop). More info here

Moog Mavis Solo

video upload by SONICrider "Sound & Vision Lab"

"'Can Mavis replace a Mother 32?'

A while ago my Moog Mother 32 got united with the DFAM and Subharmonicon: aka the Moog Sound Studio 3 (sold 1 by 1 and now together in a customized case).

So who could replace the Mother 32, well Mavis can.....

Mavis has less features as the Mother 32, on the other hand the extra features Mavis has (sample & hold, wave shaping, morphing between waves and the modulation options) makes this module capable of almost any task.

This 'Moog Mavis Solo' is a short live captured improvisation using the Koma Elektronik 'Komplex Sequencer' as CV source for pitch and gate. The sequences has the option repeat enabled = when a step is 'mutes' the last note played repeats until a new step gets triggered, this way a sequence keeps the same length."

Koma Elektronik Komplex Sequencer

"This is hands down the most versatile, feature rich and deep sequencer one could ever dream of. Always complex, never complicated. The FULLY modular structure offers tantalising ways of seamless integration to your workflow and especially to your already existing gear setups. Offering both CV and MIDI (In and Out) the Komplex is truly the machine that bridges the gap between plethora of machines.

This unparalleled feature set of sequencing options will take you to places you’d have never otherwise found. The dynamic set of features allow the user to use the sequencer easily ’as is’ and gain the advantage of the more komplex sequencing options when they so decide. The Komplex can be rack mounted if desired.

The Koma Komplex operates completely without screens and submenus of any kind. This tactile nature of the sequencing beast is what makes working with it deeply enticing time and time again.

This unit is in perfect MINT condition and you are hard pressed to see a single scratch on it (please see pictures). It is sold by the original owner and has always been kept in a well maintained, smoke and pet free studio. The sale comes complete with the original packaging and a personalised note from the Koma manufacturing team. This is a wonderful opportunity for people who have been trying to find the out of production Komplex in sale for a long while. These are obviously well loved by their user-base and usually sell fast.

The feature list and the possible applications are FAR beyond the scope of what I can tell you here. Rarely is the overused saying ‘The sky truly is the limit’ as on point as it is with this particular sequencer. Please check the manuals below for inspirational dive into the machines capabilities."

The Sands of Time | Hallucinogen

video upload by CAMPVS MARTIVS

"Imagine being out in the middle of the desert near the ancient city of UR in Mesopotamia back 5,000 years ago. That's what the theme of this piece is all about. Recorded on 4 tracks using the LA67 Mort's Barge a Electro-Harmonix 45000 and the beautiful echoes of the Meris Polymoon and some reverb."

"A visual study of the Moche Culture of northern Peru. Created in one take using Mort's Barge System by LA67 and a dash of the KOMA Elektronik Field Kit FX. It is a known fact that the Moche culture like many others used hallucinogens to aid in their rituals and religious rites. This is the central theme of this electronic piece."

Solder a DIY module with us at Superbooth 2021!

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"We've made you a little something, and you can build it at Superbooth 2021! A lot of friends online and offline have asked us about TausenddB, the little four channel preamp eurorack module we used to record our piezo videos with, so we've made it into a DIY Kit. And we will premiere it at Superbooth 2021 in Berlin, where you can build it with us in a workshop!

Get tickets for the workshop: https://www.superbooth.com/de/events/...

Tausend dB was originally designed as a small run of helper modules for space explorers, a public audio installation at Reading FringeFestival 2019 and in collaboration with visualists WARPED TYPE.

It was inspired by Tom Whitwell's MusicThing Microphonie and Mutable Instruments Ears, but we needed a different set of features: more channels, because we had a lot of contact mics, so we packed four channels into 6HP; mute switches, because we wanted to be able to act quickly when things get out of hand; and a secret row of expander pin headers in the back, so we could boost CV and audio from our favourite gear and devboards with jumper wires: Bastl Kastl, Korg Volca Modular, Electrosmith Daisy, Teensy and Arduino.

Jumpers in the back let you select whether you want to filter DC offset.

Check out the other awesome workshops too: Koma Elektronik, Touellskouarn, Befaco, Leaf Audio, Fase Lunare, Shakmat, AtoVproject and Jolinlab will all be there to build awesome stuff with you! Aaaaaand we might sneak peak a module at TiNRS’s booth, who will present a lot of great new modules as well ❤️ So come check them out and say hi!"

Hacking an Arm Prosthesis to Output CV for Thought Controlled Synthesis

Hacking my arm prosthesis to output CV so that it plugs into my synth: Thought-controlled music!

Published on Feb 13, 2020 Bertolt Meyer

"Together with Chrisi from KOMA Elektronik and my husband Daniel, I am in the process of building a device (the 'SynLimb') that attaches to my arm prosthesis instead of the prosthetic hand. The SynLimb converts the electrode signals that my prosthesis picks up from my residual limb into control voltages (CV) for controlling my modular synthesizer. The SynLimb thus allows me to plug my prosthesis directly into my snythesizer so that I can control its parameters with the signals from my body that normally control the hand. For me, this feels like controlling the synth with my thoughts. I show the prototype(s), explain how we put it together and how it works, and do a little demo.

The inspiration to just try this despite not being an engineer came from wonderful Sam aka lookmumnocomputer
The inspiration to venture into modular synthesis in the first place came from the wonderful mylarmelodies"
